2004: FDA Approves First Microarray

Image of Microarrays

Genetics-based microarray technology began to enter clinical practice when the Food and Drug Administration approved the first diagnostic microarray system. The Roche AmpliChip Cytochrome P450 test for use on the Affymetrix GeneChip Microarray Instrumentation System is a laboratory test designed to help doctors personalize treatments for their patients. The system analyzes patients’ genetic information to ensure that the drug which is most effective for the specific individual is prescribed and at the optimal dosage. Use of the microarray test will help reduce the effects of adverse drug reactions and prevent patients from being treated with improper dosages.
