Web-Based Clinical Resources

Having access to reliable information about genetic and genomic clinical resources is essential for healthcare providers in caring and treatment of patients who have or who are at risk for common and rare genetic disorders. In this section, a variety of nationally recognized Web-based clinical resources are provided.

National Coalition of Health Professional Education in Genetics (NCHPEG)

The National Coalition of Health Professional Education in Genetics (NCHPEG) was established in 1996 by the American Medical Association, the American Nurses Association, and the National Human Genome Research Institute. Comprised of more than 100 diverse health professional organizations, consumer and volunteer groups, government agencies, private industry, managed care organizations, and genetics professional societies NCHPEG is committed to promoting health professional education and access to information about advances in human genetics. In 2007, NCHPEG published the third edition of its "Core Competencies in Genetics for Health Professionals." This report recommends that all health professionals possess certain core competencies in genetics so that they can effectively and responsibly integrate genetics into current clinical practice and education of health professionals.

Pharmacogenomics

Pharmacogenomics is the research area that involves the search for genetic variations that are associated with drug efficiency. The term comes from the words pharmacology and genomics, and is the intersection between pharmaceuticals and genomics. Pharmacogenomics is leading to drugs that can be tailor-made for individuals, and adapted to each person's own genetic makeup. Although a person's environment, diet, age, lifestyle and state of health can influence that person's response to medicines, understanding an individual's genetic makeup is key to creating personalized drugs that are work better and with fewer side-effects.
