1994: Microbial Genome Project

Image of bacteriaThe DOE began a Microbial Genome Program in late 1994 to sequence the genomes of some bacteria. The microbes DOE chose do not cause disease but are important for their environmental, energy, and commercial roles. The program strives to better understand the bountiful microbial resources on Earth.
