Biography

Dr. Elise Feingold joined NHGRI (then NCHGR) in 1992 as a program director focused on gene discovery, gene expression and functional genomics. Since 2019, Dr. Feingold has served as the scientific advisor for strategic implementation, providing leadership and high-level guidance for the prioritization, development and implementation of new initiatives both within the Division of Genome Sciences and across the NHGRI Extramural Research Program (ERP). In addition to these programmatic activities, Dr. Feingold has co-managed the ERP scientific program analysts since 2013.

From 2003-2019, Dr. Feingold initiated and led the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project, which aimed to generate a comprehensive catalog of functional DNA elements within the human and mouse genomes. Previously, Dr. Feingold managed, in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, the Mammalian Gene Collection project, which created a comprehensive collection of sequence-verified full-length human and mouse cDNA clones.

Dr. Feingold received a B.A. in biology with a concentration in genetics from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in human genetics from Yale University. She completed post-doctoral research at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the NIH.
