Long-time science writer Steven Benowitz joined the NHGRI communications team as an associate director in 2013. He covers NHGRI's Extramural Research Program, writing about a broad range of funded projects and programs, and working with grantees and institutions from around the country.

Mr. Benowitz has worked as a science writer and public information officer for Ohio State University in Columbus, Pennsylvania State University in Hershey, and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where he helped lead research communications for more than a decade. In 2008, he left Jefferson to serve as communications director at the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego.

As a journalist and freelance writer, Mr. Benowitz has written for publications such as Science News, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Bulletin and The Scientist, where he covered the race to find BRCA1 - a gene that increases the risk of breast cancer when mutated - and the development of the Human Genome Project. He was a contributing correspondent for the Journal of the National Cancer Institute for more than a dozen years.

Working at NIH is a homecoming of sorts. He participated in a science writing internship at the National Cancer Institute in the same building he sits in now. Mr. Benowitz holds a bachelor's degree in biology and a master of arts in journalism, both from Penn State University.
