Postdoctoral Fellowship in Functional Studies for Cardiometabolic Disorders
A full-time postdoctoral fellowship position is available at the Center for Research on Genomics and Global Health (PI: Dr. Charles Rotimi) in the National Institutes of Health.
Position Description
The Center conducts research into the roles of genetics, genomics, lifestyle, culture and other factors in disease etiology, differential susceptibility to disease, and variable drug response at the individual and population levels. Investigators at the Center use genomic tools to understand the genetic architecture and pathobiology of cardiometabolic and other disorders, including obesity, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and kidney diseases, in different human populations with particular attention to African Americans and Africans. The Center also develops genomic resources for the conduct of primary research into the etiology of cardiometabolic disorders; develops and tests genetic epidemiology and population genetics approaches that facilitate the analysis of data generated in African, admixed and other populations; and investigates how knowledge and understanding of the roles that socio-cultural and genomic factors play in health disparities can be translated into policies to reduce or eliminate these inequalities in the United States and globally.
Qualifications:
Candidates should be close to obtaining or have obtained a Ph.D. within the past five years in molecular biology, molecular genetics, cell biology, or a closely related field. Desirable skills and areas of expertise include molecular biology, sequencing, proteomics, biochemistry, reporter assays, functional studies in model organisms and cell lines, cell/tissue culture, microscopy, single-cell multi-omics and bioinformatics. Applicants must have experience or interest in developing expertise in conducting functional assays and investigating cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the etiopathogenesis of complex traits. Applicants must have excellent communication skills and be fluent in both verbal and written English.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work on experimental design, assays/experiments, data analysis and drafting of manuscripts on genetic loci identified from projects in the genomics of cardiometabolic and other complex traits. These projects have identified candidate loci from datasets that include (among others) genome-wide SNP array, whole genome sequence, whole-exome sequence, transcriptomic, metabolomic and microbiome data along with rich phenotype data. Fellows will have the opportunity to develop their own research ideas within the scope of the Center’s mission and gain experience of collaborative projects. Fellows routinely participate in seminars and journal clubs and present research at conferences. Career development support will be available within the Center and fellows will have access to a wide array of training and career development opportunities offered by the NIH Intramural Research Program (https://training.nih.gov).
Duration and Salary
This is a fulltime two-year initial appointment with year-to-year renewal (for up to a maximum total duration of five years) based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience, based on the NIH Postdoctoral Intramural Research Training Award and Visiting Fellow scale.
How to apply
Applicants should submit: 1) a curriculum vitae; 2) a statement of research interests to be pursued during training; and 3) three letters of reference.
Email applications to Dr. Ayo Doumatey, Ph.D. at doumateya@mail.nih.gov.
This application will remain open until the position is filled.
Federal agencies may request information regarding the vaccination status of selected applicants for the purposes of implementing other workplace safety protocols, such as protocols related to masking, physical distancing, testing, travel, and quarantine.
