NHGRI researchers teamed up with Clinical Center staff to study the evolution of the Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) organism, which was the cause of an outbreak that began in the summer of 2011 and was subsequently tracked. A study published in August 2012 established a role for genome sequencing in tracing the mutation of the bacteria during the outbreak.
