Funding Policies and Guidelines
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grants Policy Statement is the definitive resource for grants policy. Those interested in applying for a specific grant solicitation will find references and links to relevant policies within the grant announcement.
Introduction
The NIH is the principal federal agency responsible for biomedical and behavioral research and research training. As such, it is accountable to Congress and the general public for responsible stewardship of federal research dollars. Sound management of research funds requires oversight by both the recipient institution and the sponsoring agency.

This general guidance is given with the premise that the grantee has a working knowledge of the NIH Grants Policy Statement, understands whether an action requires NHGRI prior approval, and has consulted with their Program Director and/or Grants Management Specialist on any unusual aspects.
Guidance herein is for the typical prior approval request - additional information may be required based on unique circumstance for the specific action in question.
