Bettie J. Graham, Ph.D.
Division of Extramural Operations
Ph.D. Baylor College of Medicine, 1971
Biography
Dr. Bettie Graham provides leadership for all of NHGRI's extramural training programs, especially for the NHGRI Minority Action Plan. This bold new program aims to increase substantially the number of individuals from underrepresented groups conducting genomic and ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) research. Dr. Graham manages the review of proposed minority action plans from NHGRI grantees, and devises new approaches regarding training of underrepresented groups. A program director for DER since 1989, she oversees the NHGRI Training and Career Development Program, the Small Business Innovation Research Program/Small Business Technology Transfer Program, and the Loan Repayment Program. Dr. Graham is involved in the trans-NIH mouse initiative, as well as the scientific program management of grants related to mapping technology and the application of mass spectrometry to DNA and protein sequencing.
Dr. Graham received the PHS Special Recognition Award in 1993 and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director's Award in 1986, 1991,1993,1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003. She received her Ph.D. in virology from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
