Centers of Excellence in Genomic Science (CEGS)

The CEGS program supports multi-investigator, interdisciplinary research teams working together to address biomedical problems through development of integrated, transformative genomic approaches.

Overview

The NHGRI CEGS program was established in 2000 to stimulate the development of novel approaches for conducting biomedical research at genomic scale. CEGS develop new concepts, methods, approaches, tools, and technologies utilizing the expertise of multidisciplinary teams of investigators as well as substantial infrastructure. Centers are characterized by a high degree of novelty, very high potential impact on the field, an integrated approach, and the ability to take scientific risks in pursuit of a significant advance. Topics explored are covered by NHGRI’s current broad research portfolio in basic genomic science, genomic medicine, data science and computational genomics, as well as research that integrates across more than one topic.

In addition to innovation and the pursuit of advances in genomics, the CEGS program addresses other important goals including research education and outreach, diversifying researchers and research participants involved in the CEGS, and resource sharing to the broader research community.
