Biography
Amy R. Bentley is a Staff Scientist with the Center for Research on Genomics and Global Health (CRGGH). Dr. Bentley graduated from Guilford College in 1995 with a B.A. in English and Spanish and a minor in East Asian Studies after completing semesters abroad in Beijing, China and Guadalajara, Mexico. Dr. Bentley completed a B.S. in Nutrition from LaSalle University in 2003. With the support of an NIH training grant, Dr. Bentley received a Ph.D. in Nutrition with minors in Epidemiology and Genetics from Cornell University in 2010, completing a dissertation entitled Oxidant-Antioxidant Balance and Lung Outcomes: The Role of Nutrition, Genetic Susceptibility, and Cigarette Smoking. Specifically, her work focused on differences in the pulmonary response to the oxidative stress from cigarette smoking that were associated with genetic variation in antioxidant enzymes or with dietary antioxidant intake.
Dr. Bentley joined CRGGH in 2010. She was drawn to the CRGGH by the opportunity to investigate complex diseases in the context of diverse populations and the accompanying spectrum of variation in both genetic and environmental backgrounds. Her primary interest is in using genomics to investigate cardiometabolic traits, particularly serum lipids, in African ancestry populations. She also focuses on the complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors in the etiology of these traits. She is committed to participating in large-scale consortia, such as the Cohorts on Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) consortium, in order to support the inclusion of African ancestry populations in such efforts. Dr. Bentley is very motivated by issues of equity and diversity in genomics and has worked to highlight concerns related to the lack of diversity among research participants and researchers and to critically evaluate the field’s progress in these areas.
