Overview

In 2012, NHGRI formally reorganized its institutional structure by dividing the institute's Extramural Research Program into four new divisions and promoting to division status the office overseeing policy, communications, and education, and the office overseeing administration and management. The reorganization was approved by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and announced at the 66th meeting of the National Advisory Council for Human Genome Research. The organizational structure is intended to support the institute's expanding mission, which has evolved from the singular focus on the Human Genome Project to pursuing an exciting and broad set of opportunities for using genomics to advance medicine and improve human health.
